The Letts range of GCSE titles are revision courses on CD-ROM covering every exam board. Each title is designed with the specific course in mind--you cannot revise the same way for each subject (as there are no set "right" or "wrong" answers in English, unlike Chemistry for example). Once the program has been installed (please note you will still need to put the CD in the drive due to the large amount of content) you will need to log in as a user. Multiple users can be entered and all individual scores and progress will be stored. You're now ready to revise. The main screen provides three main options-Revision, Progress and Mock Exam. "Revision" is broken into the main study sections and includes exam and revision hints and tips. "Progress" is where you'll find the records of results, how much content you've covered and which areas need more practice. The "Mock Exam" includes the answers, so you can test yourself first or run through the paper and view the answers at the same time. As well, the software comes with a manual that's also available online within the program, a timer which allows you to set limits for revision sessions and a pop-up notebook. Titles available in the Letts GCSE range are Maths, English, Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, French, German and Spanish. -

Islamic countries are as different to the west as anywhere in the world, and it is perhaps for this reason that, to western eyes, they have always seemed enigmatic. The Discover The Orient CD-ROM provides an introduction to what is often seen as an opaque part of the world.Filled with haunting images of the deserts of Arabia, the nomads that live in them and of the beautiful architecture which fills many of the mosques of the region, this is a good starting point for those wanting to find out more about the area that gave birth to Islam and had a worthwhile, if basic, introduction to Islam and its tenets, as well as some unique illustrations of Islamic art. There is also a run-through of the history of the Crusades and the Ottoman Empire and a guide to "the land of the 1001 nights". The current conflicts between West and East are not really addressed, though, which is an understandable if somewhat disappointing omission.
Perhaps the best section is that dealing with the nomadic desert peoples and their history, and the haunting, accompanying music. This, together with the many beautiful images, means that the package is worthwhile in demystifying a part of the world which we are often led to believe is more foreign and frightening than is really the case. --Toby Green
Titles in this series include Discover Egypt, Discover France, Discover Great Britain, Discover Greece, Discover Italy, Discover Spain and Discover The Med.

Play and Explore Starting School is a fun CD-ROM aimed at children aged 3-5 years. It presents a good range of activities that are clearly explained and very easy to follow. There are nine different games for children to play, most of which can be played at different levels of difficulty. Children will enjoy, for example, leading Timmy through the maze, finding the hidden elephants and creating a monster picture. This CD-ROM is a good way to introduce children to simple and fun computer games that involve listening to instructions and becoming confident at controlling the mouse.
There is also a good guide for parents which lists the skills that children will be developing and suggests other very good activities. Sheets can also be printed out to go with these activities. --Amanda York
