The Science GCSE Revision CD from the BBC's Bitesize Revision series is an excellent resource for study and preparation for exams. Installable on a PC operating with Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or 98, it presents you with a full regimen from which you can organise effective revision over any period of time. Multiple users are supported, each able to keep track of his or her own progress. There are plenty of practice questions and "revision bites", and you can highlight areas on which more study is necessary. Work from the CD can be printed in PDF format to take away from the computer, and you can pace your progress in several different ways, coming back to the desired place on subsequent sessions.Science topics include all items dealt with in GCSE standard, with study divided by tier (Double or Single Award Science, Foundation or Higher) which is selectable at the start of revision. Topics cover extensively several subjects, including all the current themes taught in the disciplines of Chemistry, Physics and Biology, all clearly illustrated with examples and plenty of factsheets and diagrams. Reference tables and summaries are available, and you can keep your own fully organised and personalised notebook alongside lessons. There must be a certain art to passing exams that is invariably picked up with experience over time. Time, however, is what most revision students don't have much of. To build that necessary confidence and knowledge without the advantage of time, Dorling Kindersley has devised a series of GCSE CD-ROMs, which it hopes will ensure a grade C or above in the relevant subject. Its revision programmes--covering the syllabuses of all examining boards--are designed to focus the student's existing classroom knowledge, which is reinforced by easily accessible definitions and key points within simple subject selections. It also creates real exam conditions and practice in the form of quick-fire test questions under time restrictions, with immediate feedback on the results. Past papers and model answers are also available online. The key points on each subject area in GCSE English CD-ROM appear in successive text boxes on the left and pictures on the right of the screen. Occasionally these visual images become inspirational aids that may help the recall of a student as they write. This is particularly true of the section summarising war poetry, which carries evocative black and white photographs of World War I soldiers. The helpful hints and advice, the clearly explained rules of spelling and grammar, and the revision tests and past papers should all help build the necessary skills of comment, analysis, and interpretation, together with a feeling for pace and accuracy under exam conditions. The great benefit of this CD is that it is useful and straightforward enough for any student needing to grow in confidence and knowledge in the build-up to those all-important summer exams.--Susannah Steel

The Letts range of GCSE titles are revision courses on CD-ROM covering every exam board. Each title is designed with the specific course in mind--you cannot revise the same way for each subject (as there are no set "right" or "wrong" answers in English, unlike Chemistry for example). Once the program has been installed (please note you will still need to put the CD in the drive due to the large amount of content) you will need to log in as a user. Multiple users can be entered and all individual scores and progress will be stored. You're now ready to revise. The main screen provides three main options-Revision, Progress and Mock Exam. "Revision" is broken into the main study sections and includes exam and revision hints and tips. "Progress" is where you'll find the records of results, how much content you've covered and which areas need more practice. The "Mock Exam" includes the answers, so you can test yourself first or run through the paper and view the answers at the same time. As well, the software comes with a manual that's also available online within the program, a timer which allows you to set limits for revision sessions and a pop-up notebook. Titles available in the Letts GCSE range are Maths, English, Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, French, German and Spanish. -
