Windows XP Learning is a multimedia tutorial for those who learn best by seeing and hearing. Aimed at beginners, there are two courses on one CD, covering Windows Basics and Windows Advanced. The teaching approach is straightforward. For each topic, you see actual Windows XP screens while the instructor explains what's what. Then you are asked to click in the correct place to complete a task. If you prefer, clicking a Show Me button does this for you. The material is organized into topics and chapters, and for each chapter there is a 10-question quiz to test your progress. The Windows basics course covers topics including the Desktop, managing files, printing, and installing or removing programs. The advanced course includes lessons on system tools, scheduled tasks, dialup connections, media player and movie maker. There's also a quick look at using digital cameras and scanners to put new images into your computer. Even the Advanced course is easily accessible for beginners.
Although it's a foolproof way to learn Windows XP, the product has some limitations. It does not go into great detail, the search facility is weak, navigating the topics can be ponderous, and there's not much in the way of troubleshooting. On the plus side, the tutorial does show exactly what to do at each stage, and the visual screens combined with voice instructions convey the information clearly. It's particularly strong on multimedia, ideal if you want to make movies with Windows XP but don't know where to start. --Tim Anderson

Well-structured help in the form of teach-yourself tutorials can speed your progress when learning a new application and this package is an excellent starting point. There are tutorials at both beginner and advanced levels; select your level, choose a lesson and, if you wish, a topic within that lesson. Explanations then unfold in text boxes on screen. Topics can have one or several screens, presented as screenshots from the application with annotations and coloured outlines to focus your attention.Lessons in the beginner's section include using styles, hyphenation and ways of using Word's AutoText abilities. In the expert section, guidance is given on using formulae in tables, creating indexes and using bookmarks.
The quizzes are comprehensive and time consuming (the time quoted to complete the 227 questions in the beginner's assessment is 340 minutes so you need a high level of commitment). On the down side, scores are not saved and there is apparently no way of marking how far you have progressed through the quiz, nor are you shown the right answer when you get a question wrong. Nevertheless, the instructions are clear, a lot of ground is covered and you can watch a demo of the task in hand or practice it with help. --Mark Whitehorn

This computer-based training package contains a range of tutorials for the beginner and for the more advanced user. Topics are presented with the aid of screen shots from Excel annotated in red with explanatory text to accompany each step. There are 31 topics in the beginner's tutorial, ranging from using basic workbook skills to creating and editing charts and managing data. The 28 advanced topics include creating and revising pivot tables and using auditing tools.Navigation is easy once you realise that each page can have multiple sections to which you move using the "button with the strip of film" icon. The software is run from the CD-ROM so you can pop it in the drive and flip into the tutorials as necessary while you work.
Pre- and post-assessment quizzes are included. Completing a full quiz is time consuming: the estimated time to complete the Excel one, for example, is 337 minutes for 225 questions. One moan is that when you answer incorrectly, there is no way of finding out the right answer (not that we ever make mistakes!). Despite this, the lessons themselves, the demos and the "Teacher" option (practice a task with help) make a useful learning aid. --Mark Whitehorn

Outlook is Microsoft's desktop information management program: it lets you read, write and manage e-mail, keep track of your appointments and maintain a list of contacts. Learning your way around its various elements can be made easier by spending time with these computer-based tutorials. There are lessons for the complete beginner, starting with "Working with Outlook Basics" and progressing through the basic functionality of the application.Lessons for the advanced user include working with folders and forms, and working with the Rules wizard, which lets you process incoming e-mail automatically (filing all e-mails from Sara in a folder, or deleting all those from Boring Newsgroup to which you subscribed in a moment of inattention).
Navigation through the tutorials is straightforward and the software runs from the CD-ROM so that whenever you meet a new task as you work, you can pick the relevant lesson and learn how to proceed. You can see tasks demonstrated and you can practice them with help, repeat topics and generally use the lessons in the way that suits you best. --Mark Whitehorn
