This computer-based training package contains a range of tutorials for the beginner and for the more advanced user. Topics are presented with the aid of screen shots from Excel annotated in red with explanatory text to accompany each step. There are 31 topics in the beginner's tutorial, ranging from using basic workbook skills to creating and editing charts and managing data. The 28 advanced topics include creating and revising pivot tables and using auditing tools.Navigation is easy once you realise that each page can have multiple sections to which you move using the "button with the strip of film" icon. The software is run from the CD-ROM so you can pop it in the drive and flip into the tutorials as necessary while you work.
Pre- and post-assessment quizzes are included. Completing a full quiz is time consuming: the estimated time to complete the Excel one, for example, is 337 minutes for 225 questions. One moan is that when you answer incorrectly, there is no way of finding out the right answer (not that we ever make mistakes!). Despite this, the lessons themselves, the demos and the "Teacher" option (practice a task with help) make a useful learning aid. --Mark Whitehorn
