Pinnacle Studio Version 8 is the 2002 release of the company's video-editing software. The application has an elegant, simple design, making it easy for beginners to work their way in, while still offering quite sophisticated facilities for the more experienced. There are three main parts to the Studio 8 display. First there's the album, which can show video clips, transitions, sound clips or DVD menu screens. To the right of this is a preview panel that can run your video at any stage during the editing process. Below both of these is the storyboard, where you drag-and-drop the various elements that make up your finished video. This display can be switched to show a timeline or a file list in case you prefer working with either of these aids. As you call up other functions of the program, such as sound facilities or titling, the appropriate editing windows slide up or zoom out as needed.
Video capture calls up a separate display, where you can control your video camera from within the software and pull in just the scenes you want to add to your edit. At the other end of the process you can burn your completed video to a CD or DVD, again from within the program. --Simon Williams

If you want to transfer your home videos or digital photos to a long-lasting medium, like CD or DVD, Pinnacle Expression does it all with minimum fuss.Digital video editing is not a single application, but covers a whole spectrum of needs. Expression is designed at the entry-level for the home filmmaker, who may just want a more permanent storage medium than videotape for their home videos.
Expression is a simple program whose purpose in life is to prepare video CDs and DVDs. It's built around three main functions: importing a video; previewing and editing it on screen; and making a DVD or CD from the results. Each section is designed with large, clear graphics so it's very difficult to make the wrong choices.
The program can grab video from your DV camera, load AVI and MPEG clips and import stills from your hard drive, too. You can preview video before grabbing it and choose to detect scenes automatically, using date codes or scene changes. Once imported, the main editing screen opens up and you have a choice of menus to lay down for a DVD-style front-end on your finished disc. There are 45 of these predefined menu styles, but if that isn't enough--and some of the styles may be too "American" for you--you can create your own, specifying background, preview clip positions and text font.
Video editing functions are limited; you can join together separate scenes or split one into two and you can specify a blackout or dissolve between scenes, but that's about it. When it comes to writing your finished video you can choose VideoCD, S-VCD or DVD options, depending on the output media you're using.
Pinnacle also tries to sell Expression as a photo editing and slideshow tool. While it has reasonably good slideshow abilities, including the use of any of five transitions, you wouldn't really buy the product for its stills capability. Photo effects are limited to simple adjustments, such as rotation and colour correction and there are other products available which will give you more flexibility.
Bundled in with Expression is a Neato labelling starter kit and even a DVD-style library case for your first home-burnt DVD. This includes a handy label applicator and a limited supply of inkjet-printable disk labels and case sleeves. Expression works very well at its basic level, but don't expect a lot of versatility in the preparation of your videos. --Simon Williams

Pinnacle Instant Copy 8 is a comprehensive DVD and CD copying program that can even copy a DVD to a series of VideoCD discs. It won't flout copyright protection schemes, though. In essence, this is a single function program--it copies DVDs and CDs. However, it sets out to make the process as simple as possible and to offer as many combinations of copy as there are configurations of PC. So, for instance, you can copy a DVD to a recordable or rewriteable DVD, to multiple CDs or to an image on a hard drive. When copying to another DVD or CD, you can copy on-the-fly or by using a hard drive file as an intermediary.
At a basic level, Instant Copy 8 is very easy to use. Its modest operating window simply asks you to select the source and destination devices for the copy and then to click start. For many copies you won't need to change any of the default or automatic selections. Although the copy may take a while to complete, over an hour for a DVD at the standard compression setting, you can safely leave it unattended to get on with the job.
You can copy a typical dual-layer DVD to a DVD rewriter, using any of the current standards, such as DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD RAM, or to a DVD recorder such as DVD+R or DVD-R. Similarly, you can copy CD material to CD-R or CD-RW discs.
If you want more control over a copy or to use a slightly more unusual combination of source and destination devices, a quick click on the Advanced button opens up five tabs of options. These provide control of copy method, of preferred destination and transfer mode for DVDs and CDs, and of read and write methods for the copy.
New features of version 8 include support for BURNproof and Justlink technologies, which insure against running out of data while writing a CD-R. Version 8 also offers faster copying. This is achieved by a new High Speed Mode that compresses the data on a DVD up to four times faster than the normal High Quality mode, at the expense of some loss of quality. For more flexibility, you can also choose to copy just the main movie from a DVD, and exclude all the extras and bonus tracks. --Simon Williams
