Zoombinis Maths Journey features uncommonly fun reasoning games that require serious problem solving and maths work. This CD-ROM employs basic fundamentals of mathematical thinking while keeping children thoroughly entertained throughout.Not too long ago, Zoombinis enjoyed the good life. Though they all looked slightly different--different eyes, noses, hair, feet--such differences meant nothing to the Zoombinis. And so they lived happily on Zoombini Isle, making small, useful products, which were prized the world over.
So begins this unsuspectingly addictive CD-ROM, yet the perils that face this cheerful society are not as fearsome as the amount of time you'll potentially spend on this pursuit. Beware the chubby, chattering Zoombinis if you don't want to get hooked to your computer for at least 90 minutes a session.Adored by educators and parents alike, Zoombinis Maths Journey challenges children to employ such basic fundamentals of mathematical thinking as organising information, reasoning of evidence, finding and making patterns, and systematic testing of hypotheses. The journey follows four puzzle-filled trails, each exploring related mathematical ideas. The fundamental data and variables for all this work are the variations in the Zoombinis' features. Their "feet", for example, can be shoes, skates, whirligigs, or coiled springs (the sound effects for these items are particularly great), while their "eyes" may be heavily lidded, enhanced by eyeglasses, blocked by dark shades, or limited to just a single eyeball. Sorting and arranging these variables in order to solve puzzles requires concentrated effort from the players and the game rewards them well with inventive scenarios that evolve in fabulously curious ways as skills are gained. This may not sound like much, but when Arno the Pizza-Eating Tree Troll, who has been yammering for the perfectly topped pizza his entire lifetime, suddenly demands a perfectly topped ice cream sundae, too, it is a staggering, giddy surprise.
The product is full of so many little joys, it's hard to demand improvements. Still, it'd be a great thing if version 2 would feature something other than the monotonous, ping-ping-ping soundtrack that's featured here. But that's minor. In the end, the creators' promise that this CD-ROM will "encourage kids to develop a lifetime habit of associating fun with learning" is spot on. (Ages 9 and up) --Jean Lenihan, Amazon.com

Die Soundeffekte wurden direkt aus dem Film aufgenommen und sind bewegungssensor-gesteuert. Ausser dem typischen Summen gibt das Schwert realistische Sounds beim Schwingen und beim Auftreffen auf andere Gegenstaende von sich. Der hochwertige Griff aus Metall ist eine exakte Nachbildung des im Film benutzten Originals. Die stabile Klinge aus Polykarbonat ist fest mit dem Griff verbunden und laesst sich nicht abnehmen. Benoetigt werden 3 AA Batterien, die nicht im Lieferumfang enthalten sind. Das Lichtschwert wird styropor-geschuetzt im bedruckten Karton geliefert. Zur stilvollen Praesentation und Aufbewahrung ist auch ein schoener Staender mit dabei, der auch als Wandhalterung genutzt werden kann. Auch wenn es realistische Funktionen bietet, ist das Force FX Lichtschwert kein Spielzeug, sondern ein Sammlerstueck! Um Verletzungen oder Beschaedigungen zu vermeiden, sollten damit keine Duelle ausgefochten werden oder aehnliches!

What better way is there to learn than to have fun while gaining knowledge or practicing something already known? Disney Interactive has produced Disney Jungle Book Key Stage One, a wonderful piece of software proving that the National Curriculum and fun can go hand in hand and that education and entertainment can be merged.The program has been developed specifically by Key Stage One teachers from the UK based on the National Curriculum and using relevant UK teaching methods. Come and join Balu the bear and Mowgli the mancub from the Disney movie The Jungle Book in their adventures to find a magical object that will prevent Shere Khan the dreaded tiger from attacking and killing Mowgli. Let your children play the games and meet with Banana and Barnaby the monkeys, Mango the vulture, the Caracal and Jacko the Parrot. Through taking part in English, Maths and Science exercises, they will find all the clues that will help them to prove they're worthy and so find the object that "all tigers fear".
Curriculum content includes English (spelling, sentence construction, following instructions, syllables, reading comprehension and word recognition), Maths (addition and subtraction, measurement, counting and place value, time, shape and space) and science (variation and classification and the Human Body). The program has an "auto-levelling" system that allows it to detect your child's level in each activity. Children are moved forward if the concept or skill has been mastered; otherwise the program allows more practice to consolidate a concept.
An excellent, comprehensive pamphlet accompanies the package and a work book containing the type of exercises included on the CD-ROM allows for further practice and reinforcement away from the PC. This package is a sheer delight and will provide lots of enjoyment and fun for children aged 5-7 years. --Susan Naylor
