Fisher Price Play Family, created by FP child experts together with education experts at Davidson, comprises a wonderful series of games and activities to provide children between the ages of 18 months and three years with a basic introduction to the PC.It goes without saying that children of this age will need help in getting the most from the games, but it is important to note that it is most advantageous if the help is given in a fun, relaxed manner at the same time, allowing the children to dictate the pace and progress at their own rate.
"Level One" is specifically aimed at children who are new to a computer and who therefore have no PC skills. By pressing keys the Play Family Characters respond and help to teach cause-and-effect. As soon as children become proficient at this, move them on to level two and mouse control--and therefore cursor control--can be learned. It is advisable to start by putting your hand on top of theirs to find out how quickly they want to control the mouse themselves. An excellent, well set-out booklet accompanies the CD-ROM and this should be read before starting. The language is straightforward and jargon-free and it explains absolutely everything necessary to maximise your child's learning potential. It also gives ideas on how to extend the learning activities.
Games include:
- Who's Hiding?--teaches "in" and "behind"
- Animal Parade--teaches animal identification
- My World--teaches how to identify objects and follow instructions
- Music Magic--shows how to learn songs, sounds, rhyme and rhythm
- Shapes and Colours in My World--teaches identification of shapes and colours and recognition of shapes in objects and gives practice in following instructions
- Count with Me--teaches counting 1-10, sorting, good manners and following instructions
- Alphabet Fun--helps learning the alphabet (upper and lower case), also listening to music and creative exploration.
- Telephone Talk--this is talk on the telephone and learning about and calling people who work in the community
- Bodies in Action--teaches identification of facial features and parts of the body; also "quick" and "slow"
- Bubbles Big and Little--teaches "big" and "little" and practices following instructions.

From the darkest dungeon to the tallest turret, this CD brings a medieval castle to life for your little knight in shining armour. Another terrific interactive adventure in the Fisher-Price Great Adventures series, Castle will send you on a search for missing knights and hidden secrets while trying to protect the kingdom from Vigor the Viking. Along the way, you'll encounter tons of clickables, get the chance to make merry with a band of minstrels, feed the royal crocodile, and fire some pretty hilarious cannon fodder. Look out for falling hams. The software contains printable certificates, plus it has an area to create your own comic books, which is great fun for colouring when computer time is over. Like all Fisher-Price Great Adventures, Castle is compatible with many sizes of computer stickers, so you can make great party decorations or supplies for the craft table.
There are 12 different areas to explore and seven different activities, all with great graphics, goofy characters, and multiple levels of play. In addition to the fun of the software, Castle works on improving mouse skills, reading comprehension, and role-playing. Have fun storming the castle. --Jill Lightner

The Fisher-Price Magna Doodle CD-ROM gives young children the opportunity to scribble to their heart's content and then watch their drawings come alive in front of them on their computer screens--without mess. Simply select an adventure (which could be anything from an outer space voyage to carnival fun or a jolly balloon flight) and, depending on the adventure chosen, you are presented with a particular drawing design (for example, a rocket) which you can then colour in with a virtual pencil. The instructions are simple and easy to follow, as you are shown everything by a friendly talking doodle character. And once you have finished, you can click on a button to immediately watch the drawing in action. For example, a hot air balloon, however you have drawn it, will immediately drift above some mountains and plays sound effects at the same time. You can also adjust the speeds at which your drawings moves by clicking on a tortoise for very slow or a hare for quick action.
This is a fun and creative program for young children (3 years and above), although they will require some assistance to get going and will probably need to be shown how to save their doodles but generally it's easy to use. Mistakes can be quickly erased, it involves no paper and probably the best part for young children will be watching their finished drawings doing things such as taking off into space or diving deep into the sea. --Justin Hunt
