At first acquaintance, the basic "gaming environment" wherein LEGO Creator's players build their virtual bikes, choppers, cranes and so on, and direct their dinky, cutesy, usually pre-built minifigures, seems a little bit odd and unsettling--even bleak. Bleak enough to confirm the prejudices of parents and others who would consider computerised LEGO a travesty of the hands-on, real-world ethos of the original construction game. However, after a while, the cleverness of this CD ROM comes to the fore. In the virtual LEGO Creator world you don't just build things and then take them apart; you can make them fly at the touch of a button, give them apposite or ludicrous sounds, change their colour with a single mouse-click, even blow them up (flamboyantly) using the special DESTRUCTA bricks.
You're then able to pilot your figures and vehicles through the very world you have created, guided by an integral LEGO Creator Wizard--who is a bit like a permanently untiring, mega-brainy parent. All in all then, a rather fine and intelligent toy, albeit not one for the very young, or very active, or very easily dismayed. -- Sean Thomas

Every child learns differently. Some love to do things. Others are good listeners and enjoy songs and rhymes. In this engaging Lego program (for 3-6 year olds), the characters represent different styles of learning. Moving through the imaginative Lego landscape with a particular character, your child can explore a choice of subjects--art, music, numbers or letters. Each subject area has games led by each of the different wittily named Lego characters. Your child can learn about numbers with Matty Matics in the numbers area (he's a logical fellow you can always count on!) or use sequences of sounds such as birds singing to learn about music with Mike Graphone. Or there's Michelle Angelo who is always playing with shapes and colours. This program comes with an excellent clearly-written parental guide and if you put the time in with your children, these games will probably help their performance at school.--Justin Hunt

Combining one of childhood's most enduring toys with the current craze for Harry Potter, LEGO Creator Harry Potter has a magical capacity for entertaining young players. Use standard LEGO blocks to construct a world for Harry, Ron and Hermione then turn them loose in it. Whether setting up a postal route for Harry's owl, practising spells with the kids of Hogwarts or using the workshop to configure the LEGO buildings and structures, players will find this game thoroughly absorbing.LEGO Creator Harry Potter is atypical of children's programs that usually run players through a fixed set of activities or educational challenges. Instead, the designers have made a serious effort to leave things wide open and flexible, sticking close to the reason why kids enjoy LEGO in the first place. Players can place LEGO units--animals, characters, blocks, doors, chests--around the landscape of Hogwarts. But this is no mere simulation of a real-life play experience--this LEGO world is animated! With a single mouse click, players bring their creations to life. Place a LEGO snake on-screen in this game and it will promptly slither for cover. Likewise, the Harry Potter characters--who are incredibly charming when rendered as standard LEGO people--will move around the environment created for them, even interacting when they come together.
While the complexity of this package makes it tougher to master than many games, a series of tutorials disguised as challenges can smooth out the learning curve. Users explore the school, build LEGO trains, find lost animals and as they do, they learn the lay of the land. The challenges have another motivator built in--without them, you cannot cast all the magical spells otherwise available to Harry and the others.
LEGO Creator Harry Potter frees you to build a stage and place upon it the well-known characters from the JK Rowling novels. What happens next is limited only by your imagination. --Alyx Dellamonica

Become a trainee stationmaster and design your own railway with trains that run on time and keep your LEGO passengers happy. You can make your own tracks and towns, and the game's switches and points allow you to control all of your trains as they travel from station to station. It is relatively simple to put your computer-based railway together. You are given a toy box which has buttons that you click on to access everything you need to build a scenery or a track. You can choose specific engines or carriages for your trains and there is a speed control box as well. So you can easily stop, start, reverse and alter the speed of your trains.
This game is the computer equivalent of a model railway and LEGO hopes it will appeal to anyone from 6 years to 99 years. It will give train enthusiasts hours of fun and certainly help take their minds off all the rail problems in the real world.--Justin Hunt
