Dragon Naturally Speaking is the leading speech recognition software for the PC. The latest release, version 7, is available in three main editions and Preferred is the most feature-rich of the three. It takes dictation and operates Windows by voice, but has plenty of extras, too.The improved accuracy of Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 doesn't require a huge amount of training. Plug the supplied headset, with its noise-cancelling microphone, into the mic and headphone sockets of your sound card and spend five minutes reading through a prepared text--light-hearted stuff such as Alice in Wonderland or Dilbert. This is all you need to get started.
Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 can work with its own text editor, DragonPad, but most people will buy it to work with Word. Its simple little toolbar sits at the top of the screen or attached to the Word window and once switched on, everything you say appears as text in your normal Word document. Should the program mis-hear you, you can edit by voice, too, selecting text and choosing a correction from a pop-up list.
The Preferred version of Dragon Naturally Speaking 7 includes Natural Language commands you can use in Word, Excel, WordPerfect and AOL. These are things such as "Go to beginning of line" or "Reply to e-mail". You can also create your own new commands; ideal for inserting regularly used phrases, or even custom graphics such as a digitised signature. The program can scan your documents and contacts lists to add your personal or specialist words to its word lists, so you don't have to spell them out when dictating.
If you need to dictate while on the move, you can record files into any Pocket PC and transfer them to your desktop for the program to transcribe, when you get back to base. The program also includes RealSpeak TTS, enabling it to read your documents and e-mails aloud. --Simon Williams

Unlike the Pro version, ViaVoice Standard 8.0 only runs on Windows 9x and Me. Just like its rivals, ViaVoice is a snap to install. You will need a moderately well-specified PC to get the best of it: a 300MHz Pentium plus 64MB-96MB of RAM is recommended, though more of either won't go amiss.Plug in the headset, adjust the sound levels and read out a script to train ViaVoice. This takes a mere five minutes or so, a far cry from when training took anything up to one hour. More training is a good idea but we experienced really excellent recognition accuracies from the word go: when reading out business-style letters and reports, you can expect to get as many as 96 words out of 100 right, which is remarkable. Correcting mistakes remains a simple task, made a lot easier by the playback of what you actually said. The product has been extensively localised for the UK market and so will recognise place names, such as Merthyr Tydfil (which isn't even English!).
You can dictate in to any application but Word 2000/97 can be controlled using "natural language controls". With the mike active, you simply utter "Dictate to Word" to get going; Word is then loaded and you can begin dictation. New to this release is the ability to control Internet Explorer in this way. ViaVoice 8 is modeless: which means that you can mix dictated speech and commands in the same breath. All you have to do is pause slightly in your flow of words and ViaVoice will know that your next word is a command rather than some text.
The Standard Edition of ViaVoice differs from the Pro Edition in a few key areas but for basic dictation purposes, the Standard Edition would satisfy the vast majority of users. At less than £40, it also offers terrific value for money. --Roger Gann

VoicePad is a basic voice-recognition package designed for dictating text or controlling your computer using voice commands. You can't use VoicePadto dictate directly into other applications, but text can be cut and pasted, or saved in Word 6 format or RTF (Rich Text Format), which are readable by many word processors. Do note that this is truly a basic package: don't expect cutting-edge technology. VoicePad uses single-word recognition, so that users must pause between each word, rather than the more advanced continuous speech recognition.It is now standard practice to claim high accuracy rates straight out of the box--in other words, without first training the software to recognise your voice pattern. In fact, getting computers to recognise a voice is very difficult, and even with the most up-to-date products some training time is required. (This is known as "enrolment" in voice-recognition jargon). VoicePad improves slightly with initial training, but still peforms with some inaccuracies.
In 1997 Kurzweil was bought out by Lernout & Hauspie, who went on to develop their voice recognition product Voice Xpress. This and other major products such as IBM's ViaVoice and Dragon's Naturally Speaking all come in several versions--generally more expensive than VoicePad--but after training they may well give considerably better results.
