Learning to touch type is not the most exciting thing you will ever do. Touch typing is the sort of skill you try to convince yourself you don't need, while a voice at the back of your head keeps telling you otherwise. Just think: all that time you waste correcting typing errors, or searching the keyboard for the letter "j", could be saved up and used for something exciting, such as paragliding. You will be able to type while watching the screen, and people won't be able to laugh at your clumsy two-fingered technique.Actually, although it may not be able to compete with paragliding for adrenaline-pumping excitement, learning to touch type can actually be quite fun. Focus Essential's Teach Yourself Touch Typing is a charming little package that could have you touch typing within a week. It includes an interactive game that helps to reinforce your memory of finger positions. Simply press the keys as indicated in the on-screen diagram. Not exactly Quake, but it does the job. First, though, you learn the correct finger positions by working through the various training and speed-building modules. If you want to improve your typing skills then Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 15 could be the perfect instructor for you. This title is easy to install and to begin with you have to specify your age, your type of keyboard and your typing goal (how many words per minute). Lessons are customised to your specific needs and you get plenty of progress reports.There is a whole mixture of exercises on this program and in some lessons, on-screen hands type along with you, demonstrating where your fingers should go on the keyboard. The opportunities that you are given to customise this program makes it equally effective for beginners, busy executives and admin assistants who want to improve their skills.
There are some people who are probably put off using software programs to learn to type because they find them too impersonal. One of the main strengths of this program is that it goes out of its way to create a traditional classroom feel. You get friendly voiceovers as Mavis Beacon introduces herself, shows you around and encourages you to improve your skills.
You can be taught in either Spanish or English and it's not all work. In the game hallway, there are eight entertaining games that help to build your typing speeds and accuracy. In one game, you click on keyboard characters to make colourful bugs quickly disappear.
