When it's time to divide and conquer, the right tools are vital. Whether partitioning to create a multiple-OS machine or just to improve efficiency, users of PartitionMagic 7.0 will get the job done quickly and easily. Still, novice computer users should be extremely wary of trying this--or any other low-level operation--without patient and trusted help, as it is all too easy to make serious, irrevocable mistakes and lose precious data. That said, most who know enough about hard drives to know they need new or resized partitions should find PartitionMagic 7.0 simple and headache-free.Designed for Windows XP, PartitionMagic 7.0 7.0 does fine with earlier Windows versions and supports hard drives up to 80 GB. The BootMagic utility makes switching between operating systems as simple as rebooting.
While this wizard-driven software might make power users suspicious, it does make life much easier for all users and is still flexible enough to arrange partitions to everyone's satisfaction. While many folks will use this package once and never see it again, experienced users can resize partitions on the fly and tweak to their heart's delight. It's inevitable that some hardware configurations won't work with PartitionMagic 7.0, and that this can occasionally lead to catastrophic errors; it is absolutely essential for all users to back up crucial files beforehand. PowerQuest is generally good about providing support and patches for configuration problems, so it's best to check their Web site for information before running it. They say that breaking up is hard to do, but if you've got Partition Magic 5.0 on your side, you can slice and dice your hard drives easily and painlessly. You'll need to start from DOS or Windows, but you can add as many different operating systems as you like once you've got the partitions set correctly.The job of partitioning is made simple enough that it's sure to drive some computer techs out of business; with the simple point-and-click wizards and well-written online hints, those who know enough to want to partition can do it themselves. The preview feature is excellent, permitting you to examine the changes you're ordering before you make them permanent. This should eliminate the boneheaded mistakes that tired or stressed-out users inevitably make--and that are so devastating in low-level operations like these.
One important caveat: Partition Magic 5.0 won't work on every system. Since you're monkeying with some of the deepest elements of your machine, some configurations will return errors or simply not allow installation. This is unpredictable, but PowerQuest is constantly working on patches and upgrades (such as the promised Windows 2000 version).
On most systems, though, the software is a thing of beauty--you can cut big, fat 32-GB drives down to size; create, resize, and merge partitions on the fly; easily move applications between partitions; and convert between file systems without losing data. Whether you want to add a new OS or just maximize your hard drive space, Partition Magic 5.0 is the safest, easiest answer to your breakup problems. --Rob Lightner

CDs were a brilliant invention. Packing a mammoth 650Mb of data onto a slim disc that weighs next to nothing, they have made it simple for us to load our favourite albums, games and computer programs quickly onto our PCs. Brilliant, but not brilliant enough. As more and more of us take our computing on the move, the transporting of even a handful of CDs can become irksome. Add the fact that a spinning CD is a drain on the precious battery life of your laptop, then the hassle of ejecting and reinserting CDs on trains and aeroplanes, and an even more compact medium starts to look appealing. Enter the third version of Microtest's Virtual CD software. It throws the CDs away altogether, extracting the information from the discs, and then compressing it on your hard disk by up to 95 per cent.Once Virtual CD has created its version of your CD, be it a copy of Microsoft Office or the new Radiohead album, an icon pops up in the program's browser on your computer desktop, just like any program icon in fact. And just like a program icon, you click... and the virtual CD runs like the real thing.
An obvious bonus for those who spend a lot of time travelling is that they can take their entire music CD collection on the road with them on their laptop, and not fill up their luggage or hard disk in the process.
Even on your desktop PC, packages which require the insertion of multiple CDs will be made much less tedious. And the fact that Virtual CD runs six times faster than a standard 32speed CD-ROM drive, should ensure fewer dead-stops during graphics-heavy games, or indeed on any programs you previously ran direct from the CD. --John Rennie
