Would-be graphic designers and closet art directors will enjoy the special effects functions on Cosmi Photos 5,000 Colour Photos CD-ROM. A typical postcard shot of surf and sand from the disc's library of 5,000 images can be transformed into an Impressionist watercolour, or a psychedelic poster print, thanks to the graphic-enhancing functions on offer here: granularity, hue, saturation, contrast, filters all let you transform this series of stock photos into postmodern, playful prints; emboss, watercolour, noise and poster functions further enable creative urges. The 5,000 shots on offer here feature cities of the world -- Paris, New York, Rome, San Francisco, Stockholm -- and other random categories that make for colourful visuals, such as candy, sharks, surf and sand, and flowers. Wading through the images can be tedious, however. None of the jpegs are titled individually, which means you might have to preview 100 photos labelled Rio before finding a shot, say, of the Copacabana. Browsing through the People category's 94 random entries, you might happen upon a cheesecake shot of a glamour model, or a cheesy mother and baby shot. Still, however banal some of the images here, the editing options mean that, with a bit of a sense of humour and style, you can make a stylistic silk purse out of a sow's ear, livening up Web sites, desktops, or brochures. --Hugh Graham
