Have you ever felt that you have what it takes to become a Thunderbird? If so, now is your chance. In the Thunderbirds Operation Volcano CD-ROM you get to help the International Rescue heroes in a mission--and do some learning at the same time. Billed as an "educational adventure" the idea is that you'll learn a thing or two about volcanoes, as well as maths, English, geography, earth science, sequencing and comprehension as you go along. The learning is designed to tie in with the UK National Curriculum, and is aimed at youngsters aged 7 and up.Guaranteed to appeal to fans of the TV series, Thunderbirds Operation Volcano is packed with all sorts of surprises, so you are never quite sure what is going to happen next. There are nine missions to complete, with four levels of difficulty. The first mission, involving Thunderbird 5, has you working out the location of an erupting volcano. Subsequent missions involve rescuing people before the volcano erupts, and require the use of different Thunderbird vehicles. They need to be completed against the clock. The action follows a logical sequence, and you can only progress to the next section when the current one has been completed. To encourage you, successfully getting through the tasks in each section is rewarded with a Thunderbirds style sequence. --Sandra Vogel

With the Thunderbirds Printer Studio CD-ROM, Lady Penelope, the Captain and all the other macrocephalic puppet favourites from the children's television show get together to help you draw and print fantastic images with your computer. Quite why these inanimate defenders of global freedom should be interested in helping you design a party invitation to your nan's 80th birthday bash is never quite explained, but there's no denying the puppet pals do a pretty good job.Ally yourself with the friendly on-disk Thunderbirds characters and you can make get well cards, Christmas party invites, special bookmarks, personalised business cards... you name it. If you wish you can use the pre-designed Thunderbirds "stars" and "logos" to liven up your own ideas: try putting a flash picture of Thunderbirds 2 on your homework roster to make that schoolwork a bit more bearable, or add a hint of the Mysterons to that Halloween party invite to give it a suitably menacing air. Or just send a stylised picture of the weird chauffeur (what's his name?) to your worst enemy at school.
The software also comes with puzzles, pictures, on-screen colouring-in options, images from the TV show that can be altered and enlivened, and lots of other funky stuff that pretty much guarantee any Thunderbirds-oriented 6-year-old (and upwards) will have hours of diverting fun. --Sean Thomas
