Activision
If Wallace and Gromit turned you into a Wensleydale addict, then Aardman Animation's first feature film, Chicken Run, is sure to ruffle your feathers. But if watching the film just isn't enough, Activision's accompanying CD-Rom Fun Pack means you can take Rocky and Ginger home with you and enjoy them from the comfort of your own coop.
"Foul Play" is a collection of great clips from the film, the quality of which is fairly good for desktop viewing, though the animation is a little pixilated and can stick in places. But the real beauty of this CD is in the "eggstras"-the "Chickenizer" (a collection of cursors, wallpaper, sounds and icons for your PC); "Egg Savers" (four great screensavers based on the film animation); and the two games--"Spring Chicken", which requires a fairly limited attention span and "Run Chicken Run", a more strategic game of escape where you have to place planks over holes to guide your chickens through various fields to safety. Sounds easy? Just try it ... (you can practise in Fowler's Training Camp before playing the real game!) But beware, the games are curiously addictive, so make sure you set the "clock-a-doodle-doo" desktop alarm to stop those minutes turning into hours. --Lucie Naylor

Sabrina is in a predicament: she has accidentally miscast a magic spell and she has got herself trapped... spellbound. It is now up to the player to explore Sabrina's world and take part in puzzling adventures. Consult the spell book, use the magic tools, and find the missing spell ingredients, and set Sabrina free. In so doing, you can eventually earn yourself an official witch's licence. Warning: use the wrong magic tool at the wrong time and you finish up in the "OTHER REALM"--Drell's crazy, surreal game world, away from Sabrina's world, where you must win your freedom by chance or skill. The CD is accompanied by an excellent booklet which should be read before beginning. It is easy to follow and uses vocabulary aged at the recommended age group of 8 to 12 years. Sabrina the Teenage Witch, featuring the voice of Melissa Joan Hart and others from the hit TV series. --Susan Naylor -

Humongous
Another day, another world-dominating villain to crush. Spy Fox is back, and this time he must stop Napoleon LeRoach before the cretinous cockroach can unleash a giant robotic dog on the unsuspecting world. The nefarious commander of SMELLY (Society for Meaningless Evil, Larceny, Lying, and Yelling) has hidden the dog at the World's Fair, and every innocent tourist who visits the event helps wind up the dogbot's engine simply by passing through the fair gate's turnstiles.Combining puzzles, animations, and a loony cast of animal characters straight from a James Bond film, Spy Fox 2: Some Assembly Required equips players with fiendishly clever gadgets and the means to make fake identities for themselves. Thus armed, they can roam the World's Fair, searching for the critical off switch and deactivation codes to shut down the dogbot before it's too late.
Some Assembly Required has the usual virtues of a Spy Fox game: vivid and interesting visuals, great sound, intriguing puzzles, humor, and a lot of creativity. The gadgets are a particular delight, and the emphasis on mechanics will interest players who are keen to understand how things work. Parents will be pleased to see that values such as cooperation and teamwork are stressed, as Spy Fox relies heavily on scientists and other spies to help him complete his mission. Though the game has many animated sequences--which may frustrate task-oriented players---they are more entertaining than most segments in similar games.
Whether you're a fan of Spy Fox or you're just looking to solve some brainteasers that pack a humorous punch, Some Assembly Required will definitely deliver. The Mobile Command Center and Spy Fox gadgets await! Can you save civilization, or will SMELLY carry the day? (Ages 5 to 10) --Alyx Dellamonica

Clifford Reading is another excellent package from children's publisher Scholastic, perfectly designed to help young children aged 4-6 years to develop early reading skills. It features Clifford, the ever-popular big red dog, known and loved by many children for more than 30 years.Throughout, your child will be asked to help Clifford to explore the fun-packed neighbourhood on Birdwell Island and take part in various activities, among which are the creation of t-shirts, making a theatre sign, helping Monique the artist to identify words and paint them, dunking Clifford in the sea, and returning Loretta's parrots to her boats.
All these activities are entertaining, involving situations only Clifford can create. Skills covered include letter recognition and sorting, visual discrimination, word building, phonics, word and object association, letter/sound recognition, upper and lower-case letters, sight-word recognition, sound blending, spelling, vocabulary, listening, memory, following directions, basic PC skills, fine motor skills and creativity.
All these have seven levels of learning that automatically adjust, according to your child's progress. Once a level has been completed, and all the letters and sounds have been mastered, a Bonus Book is given as a reward. The books earned will be placed on the bookshelf in Emily Elizabeth's bedroom, and they can be accessed at any time to be read, coloured or printed out.
The accompanying leaflet is excellent: it is extremely well set out and explains everything from technical support, installation, explanations of the activities, to reporting on a child's progress, and troubleshooting, using straightforward, simple language. --Susan Naylor

Frankie and his friends are up to their antics again in Frankie Crazy Racing. The object is to teach your children essential learning skills in an enjoyable and exciting way using interactive activities. Join them as they prepare to take part in a crazy, action-packed race in Frankie Town. They'll earn power-ups, take a balloon ride, boost up their buggie and take part in Frankie's big race. The program is aimed at children aged from five to six years (year one at school) and it supports the UK National Curriculum. It is, however, also suitable for older children needing to practise the skills covered. These include letter and sound recognition and identification, reading comprehension, sentence building, counting, addition and subtraction, spelling, science, music and art.
The software is accompanied by a comprehensive, easy-to-follow pamphlet, but the manufacturers recommend use of the manual found on the CD, which gives complete game details and instructions. Parents can adjust volume levels and the level of content in the skills being covered, access progress reports, and set up assessment tests for their child.
Seven learning styles have been identified, allowing for the fact that some children respond better to learning through pictures, some through songs and others through hands-on examples. Children can make choices about how they play the games: they can be matched up to one of the Frankie All Stars to suit the style of the game being played (the Wordsmith, the Athlete, the Musician, the Team Leader, the Artist, the Scientist, the Explorer, or the Maths Whizz), or they can choose which one to play as they progress through the learning games. Visit the classroom, go into the back garden, hear Eleanor's stories, explore music with Peter, paint and decorate with Cathy, sound out words, explore the garden, go Hopsalot's Popsalot (help to count soda pop bottles for the race engines) and collect power boosters for Frankie's big race against time. Collect scattered treasures in the King's Castle, the Jungle Adventure, Pirates' Aisle and Sweetie Land. Play against a Frankie Pal or with a friend, but above all, have fun.
This is an excellent program and it's easy to install. The games are stimulating, the graphics are bright and clear and the music is catchy. The instructions are easy to understand and the variety endless, which makes discoveries exciting and learning enjoyable. --Susan Naylor
