At first acquaintance, the basic "gaming environment" wherein LEGO Creator's players build their virtual bikes, choppers, cranes and so on, and direct their dinky, cutesy, usually pre-built minifigures, seems a little bit odd and unsettling--even bleak. Bleak enough to confirm the prejudices of parents and others who would consider computerised LEGO a travesty of the hands-on, real-world ethos of the original construction game. However, after a while, the cleverness of this CD ROM comes to the fore. In the virtual LEGO Creator world you don't just build things and then take them apart; you can make them fly at the touch of a button, give them apposite or ludicrous sounds, change their colour with a single mouse-click, even blow them up (flamboyantly) using the special DESTRUCTA bricks.
You're then able to pilot your figures and vehicles through the very world you have created, guided by an integral LEGO Creator Wizard--who is a bit like a permanently untiring, mega-brainy parent. All in all then, a rather fine and intelligent toy, albeit not one for the very young, or very active, or very easily dismayed. -- Sean Thomas

Help your favourite teenage witch recover the Beanie of Ultimate Power in Sabrina the Teenage Witch: Brat Attack, a magical adventure game. It all starts with a package that should have been delivered to someone else. In it is the all-powerful propeller beanie, and Sabrina's cat, Salem, gets locked in a cage when her cousin Amanda decides she simply must have that hat. It's Sabrina's job to recover the cat and the hat from the Other Realm and defeat Amanda and her brat pack. The "Labtop" contains all of Sabrina's spells, and throughout the game, you can store new magical ingredients and spells for later use. Also, make sure to stock up on plenty of energy along the way or you could get sent back to Limbo in the laundry cupboard!
There's five different worlds to explore: Sabrina's house, the Spelleria, Amanda's Arena, Mars, and Sabrina's high school. If your own teenage (or preteen) witch enjoys the television show and has fun solving mysteries, this game should be right up her alley. It's not every day a girl gets to blast her enemies away merely by pointing a finger. With Sabrina at her side, we bet she'll find this problem-solving adventure game truly... spellbinding. --Jill Lightner

Every child learns differently. Some love to do things. Others are good listeners and enjoy songs and rhymes. In this engaging Lego program (for 3-6 year olds), the characters represent different styles of learning. Moving through the imaginative Lego landscape with a particular character, your child can explore a choice of subjects--art, music, numbers or letters. Each subject area has games led by each of the different wittily named Lego characters. Your child can learn about numbers with Matty Matics in the numbers area (he's a logical fellow you can always count on!) or use sequences of sounds such as birds singing to learn about music with Mike Graphone. Or there's Michelle Angelo who is always playing with shapes and colours. This program comes with an excellent clearly-written parental guide and if you put the time in with your children, these games will probably help their performance at school.--Justin Hunt

Knowledge Adventure
Frankie Scooter Scramble was developed to help children to learn in a fun and exciting way; to develop their love of learning by using and combining the latest educational discoveries with the very best in the latest computer technology. The games and activities have been developed to tie-in with a child's personal skill levels, and are aimed at developing knowledge and understanding of reading, maths, language, arts, science, and music. Come and join Frankie and his friends in a high-speed, daring race--a scooter race. Everyone has to prepare and each does so in their own way. Perform tasks to owner "power ups" and swap these to get helpful gadgets or unlock tracks. Keep an eye on your own scooter and see who wins.
Parents can support – there is a volume adjuster, printing can be turned on and off, progress can be monitored, curriculum levels can be adjusted and an assessment test can be used to determine your child's skill level. This assesses skills in spelling, subtraction, addition, pre-algebra, comparing numbers, number sequences, skip counting, sounds at the beginning, middle or end of words, sentence building, punctuation and use of capitals, reading comprehension, fractions, ordinal numbers, parts of speech, syllables, shapes and forms. Most important of all, the excellent manual of instructions can be accessed at any point. They are well set out and easy to follow, and should be read before play is commenced.
Skills can be practiced before putting them to work in the games, and players can choose between different levels of difficulty. It is possible for the games to be played in a particular style, dependant on a child's preferences, so that the learning is tailored to suit each individual player. The Word Smith, the Artist, the Athlete, the Musician, the Maths Whizz, the People Person and the Explorer are all on hand to help guide and support particular learning styles.
Visit the exciting Race Preparation Arena, see the race, visit the winner's circle, look at the scooter design and track builder shops, visit Eddison's store, switch to Kisha's Card Show and Eleanor's Newsroom to discover Pierre's Polar Test Track and Hopsalot's Bridge Builder. Go to Casey's Soccer Field and Frankie's Pizza Stand, and view C J's Swamp.
The manufacturers recommend this is used with children in the reception class (five to six years) but older children could certainly benefit from using the program. It's an excellent, extremely well-thought-out package--the games are stimulating and the graphics bright and clear. It's easy to install, the music is catchy, the instructions clear and the variety endless, all in all making discoveries exciting and learning fun. --Susan Naylor
