Dangerous Discovery is an interactive adventure inspired by the ever-popular Famous Five Books and is part of a range of CD-ROMs that bring the classic tales to a whole new generation (other titles include Silver Tower, Kidnapped and Treasure Island). The Famous Five are again at Kirrin Cottage during the summer holidays and get very excited when they discover an archaeological dig is taking place on the island. Inevitably they are soon involved in mystery, intrigue and strange goings on when archaeologist Mr Brown, an old acquaintance of Uncle Quentin’s, disappears unexpectedly. Julian, Dick, George, Anne and the irrepressible dog, Timmy, are soon on the case but you must help them in their search for the truth.Players can listen to the story or follow the words--this is an interactive storybook at its best as well as a thrilling adventure game. The opening minutes set the scene, giving players clues and helpful hints along the way so that not only do they get involved in the story but they can also start thinking about solving the puzzles. The dialogue can be quite long in places but there is plenty to do to keep a player interested. As the mystery progresses gameplay becomes quite complex: clues and objects are not always obvious and young players will require persistence and inspiration to solve the toughest challenges. Help is at hand both in the full-colour instruction book included and in the "Helpful Hints" file included on the disc (which, when all else fails, also includes a "Solution"). The installation process is simple and is adequately explained in the accompanying information booklet.
The manufacturer's recommended age is 8-12--which seems accurate--but younger players may need assistance as well as persistence as the game is not always easy. (Handy tip: only the tip of the cursor is used when combining things together or using things. Forgetting this can lead to confusion.) Dangerous Discovery is a thought-provoking, challenging game that will improve powers of deduction, computer operation and memory skills while helping with reading and creativity. --SusanNaylor

Frankie and his friends are up to their antics again in Frankie Crazy Racing. The object is to teach your children essential learning skills in an enjoyable and exciting way using interactive activities. Join them as they prepare to take part in a crazy, action-packed race in Frankie Town. They'll earn power-ups, take a balloon ride, boost up their buggie and take part in Frankie's big race. The program is aimed at children aged from five to six years (year one at school) and it supports the UK National Curriculum. It is, however, also suitable for older children needing to practise the skills covered. These include letter and sound recognition and identification, reading comprehension, sentence building, counting, addition and subtraction, spelling, science, music and art.
The software is accompanied by a comprehensive, easy-to-follow pamphlet, but the manufacturers recommend use of the manual found on the CD, which gives complete game details and instructions. Parents can adjust volume levels and the level of content in the skills being covered, access progress reports, and set up assessment tests for their child.
Seven learning styles have been identified, allowing for the fact that some children respond better to learning through pictures, some through songs and others through hands-on examples. Children can make choices about how they play the games: they can be matched up to one of the Frankie All Stars to suit the style of the game being played (the Wordsmith, the Athlete, the Musician, the Team Leader, the Artist, the Scientist, the Explorer, or the Maths Whizz), or they can choose which one to play as they progress through the learning games. Visit the classroom, go into the back garden, hear Eleanor's stories, explore music with Peter, paint and decorate with Cathy, sound out words, explore the garden, go Hopsalot's Popsalot (help to count soda pop bottles for the race engines) and collect power boosters for Frankie's big race against time. Collect scattered treasures in the King's Castle, the Jungle Adventure, Pirates' Aisle and Sweetie Land. Play against a Frankie Pal or with a friend, but above all, have fun.
This is an excellent program and it's easy to install. The games are stimulating, the graphics are bright and clear and the music is catchy. The instructions are easy to understand and the variety endless, which makes discoveries exciting and learning enjoyable. --Susan Naylor

Join Frankie and friends in Frankie Pet Friends, which includes lots of activities, all aimed at making learning fun. Intended for use with pre-school children (aged three to five years), the CD-ROM could also be successfully used with older children needing to practice certain skills.Parental help and guidance will obviously be needed for the target age range, and it is strongly recommended that parents read the excellent information contained in the manual on the CD-ROM before beginning—it's straightforward, comprehensive and very easy to follow. There's the opportunity to take part in an assessment test, to predetermine a child's skill level. On completion, a diagram of results is shown, indicating skill levels in letter recognition, phonics, colours and shapes, spatial awareness, sizes and patterns, number recognition, counting and quantities, and prereading rhymes, which are all subsequently practiced in the games with Frankie and his friends. Parents can also adjust volumes, view progress, and set curriculum levels.
Children are asked various questions and dependant on the choices made and their learning style, they can be helped to learn using the unique talents of either the Word Smith, the Artist, the Athlete, the Musician, the Maths Whizz, the People Person or the Explorer.
Homeless pets have been rounded up--let your child choose the pet he wants to help, then earn rewards for the pets such as food, toys, songs and brushes, as you play. Get the pet all ready for adoption, and when it has been fully cared for, join Frankie on the Hot Air Balloon, and look for a new home for your charge. The games are accessed in the pre-school classroom, and include picking a pet, playing with magic chalk, making bubbles pop, playing at shape tag, taking perfect pictures, making balloon animals and animal masks, making music, hearing rhymes, playing with the pets in their playroom, and playing in the cloud maze. These enhance phonics and listening skills, upper- and lower-case letter recognition, following directions, spatial awareness, colour and shape recognition, sorting and sizing, classification, patterns, number recognition, visual discrimination, counting one to 10, quantity recognition, early PC graphic and mouse skills, musical appreciation and composition, rhymes, pre-reading skills, all of which are necessary for overall development in later years.
This is an excellent program that is extremely well thought out and easy to install. The games are stimulating, the graphics bright and clear, the music catchy, the instructions are easy to understand and the variety is endless. At times, it was a little slow to respond (tested on a standard home PC) but, all in all, it works well and makes discoveries exciting and learning fun. --Susan Naylor

As the opening credits to Sabrina's enchanting adventure assert "She's not a normal girl, she's caught between the magic and normal world". The skills you will develop playing this game are certainly out of this world! Sabrina the Teenage Witch has lost a magical amulet at the Mall and it has fallen into the unscrupulous hands of Gem Stone who is using her powers to trap Sabrina's friends and wreak havoc. To avoid chaos at the Mall and rescue her friends Sabrina needs all of her magical powers and four mystical objects which you play games to help her find. Between the games, long animated segments featuring Sabrina and Salem explain the action and help to hold the attention. The controls are easy to use and the help pages offer clear instructions on how to play and which spells to use. In one addictive game Sabrina must rescue Harvey from the pyramid where he's been trapped. Players have to negotiate the maze of tunnels, remember routes and even play rock, paper, scissors with a mummy! Meanwhile in the "Smoothie Shack" you must zap falling pieces of fruit with magic before it falls on Sabrina and squashes her. A very entertaining game and a fun way to spend a couple of hours but just a small tip to speed up play slightly: use the mall directory to get to the action quickly rather than having Sabrina walk between game locations. --Rachel Ediss -
